Illahee Seed Library

Join us in developing a library of locally-saved and generously donated seeds that are available to everyone across the Central Coast region!

Access to healthy, viable, and reliable seeds is a critical piece of local food production. Yet it can be challenging to research which commercial varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs will thrive in our climate or to predict the cost and availability of seeds year to year.

One simple solution is to build local resources through activities like seed saving - an ancestral practice that supports us in cultivating everything from wild food plants to our favourite varieties of radish or kale.

The Illahee Seed Library exists to organize and support seed saving activities in the region and offer a stock of free, locally-adapted seeds to help community food projects thrive! In our first year, we are offering a mix of locally-saved seeds, and seeds generously donated by our friends from seed companies in BC.

Seeking Seeds?

If you are from a Central Coast community (Klemtu, Ocean Falls, Denny Island, Bella Bella, Bella Coola, Rivers Inlet, or off-grid in this region), you are eligible to request free seeds from the Illahee Seed Library.

A note on the name: Respecting that we serve a region with multiple Indigenous language and multiple Settler communities, we opted to utilize Chinook Jargon in naming our programs. Ilahee is Chinook for earth.
